Steel recycling success in Italy
Steel recycling success in Italy

As Steel for Packaging Europe has shared the exciting news that steel packaging recycling rates in Europe continued their upward trend in 2023, Italy, in particular, stands out with a remarkable leap forward, achieving an 89% recycling rate—a 10.4% increase from the previous year.
As one of the EU’s largest Member States, Italy’s progress holds special significance. Its strong performance not only reflects national efforts but also drives momentum for the entire European circular economy. Thanks to a well-established and efficient recycling system, Italy remains a shining example of what can be achieved with dedicated collaboration and consistent investment in sustainable infrastructure.
This latest data comes from RICREA, Italy’s national consortium for the recovery and recycling of steel packaging. Collected according to the EU Commission’s methodology (Implementing Decision 2019/665), the figures separately track recycled tonnages for steel and aluminum packaging, ensuring accuracy and transparency.
Despite an 8.9% decrease in steel packaging placed on the market, a shift attributed to the market stabilising post-COVID, recycled tonnage actually rose by 3.1%. This increase is likely due to the long shelf life of steel cans, combined with Italy’s unwavering commitment to capturing every recyclable item. The current figures, therefore, represent a return to more normalised market conditions, but with even stronger recycling outcomes, reinforcing Italy’s leadership in sustainable steel packaging practices and the broader European commitment to building a more circular, resource-efficient economy.
Steel packaging is permanent, infinitely recyclable, and increasingly essential to a sustainable future. Italy’s success shows what’s possible when industry, policy, and public engagement align.
