Chromium-Free Passivation Alternative (CFPA)
Steel for Packaging Europe members strive to continually improve their methods of production to ensure that Steel for Packaging is manufactured in a sustainable and compliant way.
REACH-compliant tinplate Passivation
Chromium-Free Passivation Alternative (CFPA) is an innovative, alternative technology developed by Steel for Packaging Europe members as a replacement to the use of hexavalent chromium substances.
Hexavalent chromium substances are used globally for the passivation of steel for packaging, process by which the growth of tin oxide is controlled on tinplate. However, since their inclusion onto the REACH Annex XIV (Authorisation list) continued use of these substances is subject to a time limited approval and must soon be completely replaced.
CFPA is 100% chromium-free. The protective layer stabilises the natural tin oxide layer in an equivalent way to the current global process and ensures product performance.
This modern and innovative tinplate passivation system is commercially available with full support being offered to all can makers to make the transition to this alternative for all tinplate products.
