A welcome proposal from the European Commission to safeguard EU steel

Steel for Packaging Europe welcomes the European Commission’s decision to propose tariffs of 50 per cent on steel imports exceeding new quotas aligned with pre-overcapacity levels.
This decision represents an important step in maintaining a level playing field for the European steel industry and tackling the spillover effects of overcapacities. It provides the stability and predictability needed to continue investing in innovation, circularity, and decarbonisation across the steel packaging value chain.
As an industry committed to sustainability and responsible manufacturing, we see this as a positive signal for Europe’s green transition and industrial resilience.
